The US Abandons Its Secret Ice City, Camp Century

The US Army shut down Camp Century, its secret nuclear-powered base carved into the Greenland ice sheet to conceal a mobile missile network under Project Iceworm, after the tunnels it depended on began collapsing.

Camp Century was a nuclear-powered US Army base under the Greenland ice sheet, built from 1959 (construction June 1959 to October 1960), with 21 tunnels totalling about 3 km, publicly a research and weather station^[2][3]
Per documents declassified in 1996 it was a preliminary camp for Project Iceworm, a plan for survivable nuclear missile launch sites (up to 600 modified Minuteman missiles); missiles were never fielded and Denmark never consented^[2][3]
The ice proved less stable than assessed: trenches compressed within four years, the reactor was shut down after over three years, and Iceworm was abandoned in 1963^[2][3]
The camp was abandoned after eight years of use, in 1966 per Task and Purpose and by 1967 per Wikipedia's operating dates^[2][3]
Hazardous waste, including radioactive waste, remains buried under the ice; ice cores supported climate science and Denmark's survey has monitored the site since 2017^[2][3]
