Old Ebbitt Grill Opens in Washington
- Old Ebbitt Grill dates itself to 1856, when innkeeper William E. Ebbitt bought a hotel-boarding house near the corner of F and 14th Streets NW; the restaurant's own page says the exact original site is unknown and probably on the edge of today's Chinatown.[1][2]
- The Ebbitt House Hotel was the first in Washington to stay open all summer instead of closing when Congress adjourned.[1]
- After the old hotel was demolished for the National Press Building, the restaurant was incorporated in 1926 at 1427 F Street NW, and in 1983 it moved to 675 15th Street NW, the former B. F. Keith's Theater building a block from the White House.[1][2]
- In 1970 Stuart Davidson and John Laytham of Clyde's of Georgetown bought it at auction for $11,200; Clyde's Restaurant Group passed to Graham Holdings in 2019.[1][2]
- Presidents Grant, Andrew Johnson, Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt and Harding are said to have drunk there, and McKinley reportedly lived at the hotel while in Congress.[2]
- The mounted game trophies are rumoured to have been shot by Theodore Roosevelt, and there are four bars: the Old Bar, Oyster Bar, Grant's Bar (for Ulysses S. Grant) and Corner Bar.[1]
