Estimate from the version's published specs, benchmarks and reviews, 0-5; scores are only comparable within one criteria year. Scored as launched (Claude Opus 4.8, 28 May 2026): Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index 61.4 (max effort, #1) per its 28 May 2026 launch article, the index version then current; the live AA page now lists 42 on v4.3.2, which is why launch-time figures are used. Coding null: no Terminal-Bench 4.0 at launch (Anthropic cites Terminal-Bench 2.x). 1M-token context; $5/$25 per 1M (about $10 blended); Fast mode $10/$50. 63.0 output tokens/s on Artificial Analysis (live page, 24 Oct 2026). Text and image input. 4 reviews, string-matched.[1]
Opus 4.8 scores 61.4, up +4.1 points from Opus 4.7 and +1.2 points ahead of GPT-5.5 (xhigh), the previous Index leader.
It's so refreshing to see an AI lab honestly describe a release as a minor incremental improvement over the previous model!
But Opus 4.8 still uses roughly 30 percent more passes than OpenAI's GPT-5.5, the second-place model.
Claude immediately offered a sharp realistic reality check that gently but firmly suggested my 'couch detective' career was nothing more while setting firm boundaries about the dangers of amateur sleuthing.

Photos from readers, kept apart from the pin's sourced media. Rate what you ate or saw, and on a restaurant pin tag the dishes right on your photo.
The first entry is always the pin's source. Overall confidence is a weighted average of how firmly each reference supports the start and end times used above; a reference counts half as much for every 180 days older than the newest.
Anthropic's[3] own announcement, dated the day the model became available.
Anthropic's[1][3] Claude Opus 4.8 model page lists a 1M-token context window, 128K max output tokens, adaptive thinking with high default effort, and a Jan 2026 reliable knowledge cutoff.
Anthropic's[1] Claude[2] Opus page lists this announcement and its date.
Something missing or wrong? Say it in your own words: a link that backs this pin up, a different start or end date and why, or a fact it lacks or gets wrong. The AI checks it against this pin's sources, searches for better ones, and adds any page that backs you up. The pin's own sources still count most. A picture that shows something else, or shows it badly, is looked at too, and moved down or replaced.
