OpenAI's first Intelligence Processor, an inference accelerator it designed and Broadcom implemented, went from design to tape-out in nine months; Hock Tan and Charlie Kawwas handed it to Sam Altman and Greg Brockman.

OpenAI and Broadcom unveiled Jalapeño, OpenAI's first Intelligence Processor: an accelerator built around OpenAI's view of LLM inference and the first in a multi-generation compute platform the two are building^[1]
Broadcom's Hock Tan and Charlie Kawwas delivered Jalapeño to OpenAI's Sam Altman and Greg Brockman^[1]
OpenAI designed the chip from scratch; Broadcom handled silicon implementation and networking, including Tomahawk, and Celestica the boards, racks and system integration. It went from initial design to manufacturing tape-out in nine months, helped by OpenAI's own models^[1]
Engineering samples were running ML workloads, including GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark, at production target frequency and power; early testing showed performance per watt substantially better than the current state of the art, with a technical report promised in the coming months^[1]
The platform is designed for initial deployment by the end of 2026, and Tan said it enables gigawatt-scale data centers with Microsoft and other partners beginning in 2026^[4]
Brockman told CNBC the chip was designed end to end in nine months with help from OpenAI's models, and that OpenAI "cannot get compute fast enough"; Broadcom shares climbed on the news^[5]
The companies disclosed no performance targets, benchmarks or memory configuration at the unveiling^[6]
At Hot Chips in August OpenAI gave the chip 216 GB of HBM4 and up to 13.4 MXFP4 PFLOPS at 700W, scaling to 128 accelerators per rack and 2,048 per 16-rack pod^[3]
Broadcom said it shipped Jalapeño in its fiscal third quarter (ended 2 August 2026)^[2]
