With Dell having announced its upcoming 5120 x 2880 "5K" display that would be the equivalent of a Retina 27-inch iMac or Apple Thunderbolt...

VESA released the DisplayPort 1.3 standard on 15 September 2014, raising maximum link bandwidth 50 percent to 32.4 Gbps (four lanes at 8.1 Gbps), or 25.92 Gbps of uncompressed video data^[1][2][3]
MacRumors links the release to Dell's announced 5K display and rumoured Apple Retina iMacs and displays, saying connectivity was one bottleneck; DP 1.3 would presumably come to future Thunderbolt^[1]
KitGuru says it remains to be seen when DP 1.3 graphics cards and monitors arrive, likely next year^[3]

Notable features

DisplayPort 1.3 is VESA's update to the DisplayPort 1.2a audio/video standard and continues to support video conversion to VGA, DVI and HDMI^[2]
It enables 5K (5120 x 2880) over a single cable without compression, and two 4K UHD monitors over one connection via Multi-Stream^[1][2][3]
It also adds HDCP 2.2, HDMI 2.0 with CEC and a 4:2:0 pixel structure for future 8K displays^[2][3]
At 8.1 Gbps per lane it can drive a single UHD monitor at 60Hz with 24-bit colour over two lanes, leaving the other two for data such as SuperSpeed USB in DockPort; DisplayPort is the A/V transport used by DockPort and Thunderbolt^[2][3]
