Boeing has confirmed the first 777-9 delivery will come in 2027, after CEO Kelly Ortberg said on October 29, 2025 that certification would need at least all of 2026 and disclosed a related $4.9 billion charge^[1][4]
Boeing held that line in its first quarter 2026 results, saying the programme "has continued to make steady progress on 777-9 certification" and that "the company anticipates first delivery in 2027" - the same timeline it set the previous October^[4]
The aircraft was originally due to enter service in 2020, so the slip runs about seven years, and Boeing has taken roughly $15 billion in charges on the programme in total - Reuters reported the $15 billion figure in February - well beyond the single $4.9 billion charge announced with the new schedule^[1][4]
Simple Flying's cost-recovery math: at the widely cited $440 million list price with $50 million profit per aircraft, Boeing would need to sell roughly 300 to match the overruns^[4]
Lufthansa is the launch customer, not Emirates; Lufthansa Aviation Training says delivery is currently scheduled for mid-2027, Cathay Pacific said in March it expects its first in 2027, and Emirates "has signaled it is planning for late 2027" - later than the May or June 2027 the pin describes^[4]

Certification still had gates to clear: the FAA cleared the 777-9 into Type Inspection Authorization Phase 4A in March 2026, with Phase 4B and Phase 5 still to come before broader functionality and reliability work and the ETOPS-related operational proving on production-standard aircraft, so "much of 2026 will be spent finishing formal flight-test phases"^[4]
Flight testing was active, with three of the five test aircraft flying over 40 flights in the month of the report^[4]
A backlog of early aircraft waits on the outcome: Boeing has assembled as many as 26 777Xs between 2018 and 2022, five in test use, leaving 21 stored at Paine Field "parked nose-to-tail on a runway with large blocks hanging from their wings in place of engines", which may need configuration changes, engineering updates, inspections or cabin and systems modifications before they are delivery-ready^[4]
The 777-8F freighter is expected to follow in 2028, "although Boeing has given no assurance around that timeline"^[4]

Notable features

The 777-9 is the larger of the two 777X passenger variants, a substantial development of the original 777 with General Electric GE9X engines, composite wings with folding wingtips, greater cabin width and seating capacity, and technologies from the 787 Dreamliner; it first flew on January 25, 2020^[3]

Its two GE9X engines are rated at 110,000 lbf (490 kN) of thrust each, with a 132 in (335 cm) fan, the largest GE has made^[3]
