Prague and Stockholm signed a joint declaration to keep the Čáslav-based Saab JAS 39 Gripen fleet flying beyond the lease's 2027 expiry, until Czech F-35s arrive; the binding contract covering 12 jets to 2035 was still being negotiated the following year. On 31 August 2024 the Czech Republic signed a joint declaration with Sweden on extending its lease of 14 Gripens (12 single-seat, two two-seat) beyond 2027 until F-35As arrive; the binding lease contract came later^[3]
The Gripens were delivered in 2005 and are based at Caslav Air Base, originally as an interim solution; the Czech Republic ratified purchase of 24 F-35A in September 2023^[3]
