No date has been set. Kalshi[1] dates its event to March 25, 2029, the last day the Basic Law's 46-to-48-month window allows after the current Bundestag first sat on March 25, 2025; a snap election would come earlier.- Start

Germany Elects Its Next Bundestag
$3.2M traded
The Bundestag elected in February 2025 first sat on March 25, 2025, and the Basic Law requires a new election 46 to 48 months later - March 25, 2029 at the latest. On 20 September 2026 Kalshi's winner market had the AfD at 85% and the CDU/CSU at 12%.
- Kalshi runs a market on the "Next German federal election winner?", listed under International Elections, whose event id is kxgerelection-29mar25 and whose page title dates it to 2029[1]
- At capture the market had the AfD (Alternative for Germany) at 84% (86c yes / 16c no), the CDU/CSU (The Union) at 15% (15c / 91c) and the SPD at 4% (4c / 99c), with four further parties not shown, on $64,044 of volume[1]
- The page contradicts itself on the horizon: its title and event id point to March 2029 while the order ticket gives a max payout date of Mar 25, 2030[1]
- The capture is of a logged-out page, so the AfD order ticket reads "YES --", "NO --" and "Odds 0% chance"[1]
- No link states the constitutional rule behind the date, or when the Bundestag elected in 2025 first sat[1][2][3]
- The pricing follows a collapse in the governing party's position: the CDU fell to 17.2 percent in the 6 September 2026 Saxony-Anhalt state election while the AfD took 43.8 percent, with national polls then showing "the AfD leading at 28-29 percent against the CDU/CSU at 18-20 percent"[2]
- Friedrich Merz's personal approval "has dropped to historic lows of around 13-14 percent", with speculation centred on "a possible Kanzlertausch within the CDU/CSU-SPD coalition or coalition instability" ahead of the 20 September elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern; eight CDU state premiers have publicly backed stability over personnel changes while Merz has cancelled international travel for crisis talks[2]
- Polymarket's market on Merz leaving office priced the near term at 5% by September 30, 2026, 11% by October 31 and 18% by December 31, on $1,827,504 of volume, resolving Yes "if Friedrich Merz ceases to be the Chancellor of Germany for any period of time by the specified date", with an announced resignation resolving it immediately[2]
- Those market prices sit far below public expectation: a YouGov poll reported on Sep 19 2026 "showed 48% of Germans believed Merz would leave office before the end of 2026"[2]
- The same page's news feed is internally inconsistent - a Sep 18 item headed "Merz publicly informed of resignation amid ongoing political crisis" is logged as the October 31 outcome dropping "to 17 %, 7 %", while the outcome row itself shows 11% - and its dates disagree too, with an End Date of Jan 1, 2027 against a chart label and FAQ giving Dec 31, 2026, and a stated opening of Sep 15, 2026 against an FAQ saying it "launched on Nov 5, 2025"[2]
- The Saxony-Anhalt vote was framed beforehand as a possible first: "German voters could for the first time since World War II give an outright majority to a far-right party in regional elections", with the AfD's push helped by "a charismatic lead candidate whose campaign strives to put charm above the vitriol usually associated with a party with pro-Nazi roots"[3]
- That France 24 debate of 4 September 2026 set the state's politics as "a former East German state rattled by globalisation with declining industry and an ageing population", raised the German government's direct accusation of Russia over a drone attack on a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig airport, and linked the AfD to France's National Rally ahead of "next spring's French presidential poll", noting both parties oppose a more federal Europe[3]
