Deadline for EU Listed Companies to Reach 40% Women on Boards
- 30 June 2026 is the date by which large EU listed companies must have either 40% of non-executive director seats or 33% of all director seats held by the underrepresented sex[1]
- Companies not subject to the 33% option must also set their own targets for executive directors by the same date[1]
- Parliament's Legal Affairs chair Ilhan Kyuchyuk marked the day by saying large listed companies "are as of today expected to meet the targets", 14 years after the first proposal[4]
- The European Institute for Gender Equality counted women at 33.6% of directors of the largest EU listed companies in October 2025, ranging from 46.5% in France to 8.5% in Cyprus[4]
- Companies that fall short must explain why and how they will improve, and national authorities can fine them or annul a contested appointment[3]
- Austria's new law raising its supervisory-board quota to 40% took effect the same day, while Germany kept its existing 30% quota framework[2]
